Many believe she will one day be the answer to the trivia question "who had the shortest title reign in ACW history?" It is unclear whether she is concerned with erasing that question and finding future success or simply moving on to other things in her life.
Candy Sommers grew up in Oxon Hill, Maryland, the daughter of Maryland State Senator Barbara Sommers. Her father worked a security guard at the University of Maryland and often took his daughter with him to the main campus during summers when the University athletes were returning to school. Many of the players took a liking to her, and treated her like a mascot for their teams. Derek "Farmer" Burns, an All-ACC wrestler in the heavyweight division, often brought her into the wrestling teams practices, where she would bring water or towels to the wrestlers when appropriate. The team rewarded her by giving her a miniature "letterman" jacket.
As she grew older, Candy was not involved much with athletics and was preparing to enroll as a student at the University of Maryland when she saw an announcement on a bulletin board that ACW veteran Thelma Ferguson would be on campus giving an apartment wrestling demonstration. Candy attended the demonstration and when Ferguson asked for a volunteer from the audience, Candy stepped forward. When Ferguson attempted to demonstrate a full nelson, Candy slipped out of the hold, tripped Ferguson and then applied an ankle submission lock. In anger, Ferguson went after Sommers. Candy, thinking that it was all in good fun "played along" by dodging Ferguson and applying a sliding toehold. Enraged, Ferguson had to be restrained by several officials.
As word of the incident filtered around ACW, Tanako X envisioned a marketing bonanza, pitting a David vs. Goliath scenario and set in motion a match between Sommers and Ferguson. As an added provision, he decreed, the winner would claim the recently vacated Inter-condominium title belt. Despite warnings from her friends and family, Candy accepted the invitation and the match was set for early December 2000.
The match never took place, however, as Ferguson was the victim of a brutal attack which left her immobilized and hospitalized. As the next "contender" in line for the belt, Candy claimed that she was entitled be named the champion. After the pondering the legal implications of having the IC belt held up in the courts for six months, X angered many competitors by awarding the belt to Sommers. He also mandated she would put the title on the line two days later against Diana Hunter. Hunter easily outmatched Sommers and took the title in a four minute match.
Having lived the brief glory of a title reign in ACW, she is now deciding on whether to pursue further competition. "The way I see it, how can I top this?" she asks. Many believe she will give up the sport and return to school as a typical coed. "Who knows though," she said. "Imagine the marketing opportunity if I decided to take another run at a title belt."
